MP in Xmas Club Call

7th April 2008

Kilmarnock and Loudoun MP, Des Browne has added his support to a new Christmas club scheme recently introduced by Royal Mail.

The Christmas Club is now available at all Post Office® branches nationwide offering members a way to plan ahead and budget for Christmas 2008. The scheme entails making pre-payments from just £5 over the counter at any Post Office® branch using a special Christmas Club payment card.

From 1st November the card is unlocked, enabling customers to use it to buy with vouchers goods and services directly at retailers such as HMV, House of Fraser, JJB Sports. The Post Office® has negotiated partnerships providing club members with over 200 places to spend the vouchers. In addition to this each club member will receive a great bonus booklet of at least £100 in special offers with selected retail partners. Local MP Des Browne is supportive of the scheme.

“Recent research conducted by YouGov found that many of us feel pressured to overspend at Christmas. The Farepak experience demonstrated that the festive period represents a major financial commitment for people, particularly those on lower-incomes.

The best approach is always to plan and budget and The Post Office® Christmas Club fills a gap identified by HM Treasury’s Review of Christmas Saving Schemes. Like the National Consumer Council I am happy to endorse this scheme as it is important that there is a choice of secure products on the market for people who want to pre-pay or save for Christmas.”

Mr Malcolm Brown of Auchinleck Post Office is also supportive of the scheme.

“I am delighted that Des Browne has chosen to endorse the Christmas Club. This club offers an easy and safe way to save for what can be a very expensive time of year for people. It is particularly good as people can purchase gifts from a wide range of high street stores so that every taste is catered for.  If anyone is interested in joining the club they can pop in to the Auchinleck Post Office and pick up an application form.”

Customers can sign up and start putting money away for next Christmas by obtaining application packs from any Post Office® branch.
