MP delighted by Veterans Extension Friday 1st February 2008 Kilmarnock and Loudoun MP, Des Browne was delighted by the announcement that eligibility to apply for the HM Armed Forces Veterans Badge has been extended to include all those who have served in UK Armed Forces. The local MP is eager for more local veterans to receiver their badges.
Des said:
“I am delighted that we are able to make this announcement which means veterans of the ongoing operations in Iraq and Afghanistan are now eligible. It is difficult to fully express our gratitude to those individuals who have served both here in the UK and abroad. However these badges go some way to recognise their efforts. I would encourage any veterans living in Kilmarnock and Loudoun to contact my office on 01563 520267 to obtain an application form.”
The MP, who is also the Secretary of State for Defence, has already hosted a series of presentation events over the past year which has seen almost 400 local veterans receive Veterans Badges. The events have proven to be hugely popular amongst Kilmarnock and Loudoun veterans (pictured right).
The extension announcement was coupled with the news that Blackpool has been chosen to hold this year's National Veterans Day event.
The event on 27 June 2008 will be the third annual Veterans Day and is an opportunity to recognise the contribution made by veterans of all ages in conflicts both past and present. Attractions include an Aero GP where veteran pilots will compete in performing demonstrations of dog fighting and target bombing, and a Veterans Badge Challenge in which veterans will attempt to climb Blackpool Tower, and dive to the bottom of a shark tank, to retrieve their badges.
