LOCAL MP SLAMS DANGEROUS PARKING 13th March 2008 Local MP, Des Browne, hit out at selfish drivers who park their cars on the pavement of Newmilns High Street.
This matter has been taken up with him by constituents who had previously consulted their local councillor without any success.
Des has written to the Police and to East Ayrshire Council demanding early action to prevent this dangerous practice.
Des said: “Parking on the pavement, especially a narrow pavement, is a selfish and dangerous act. Pavements are for pedestrians. When cars obstruct the pavement others, especially wheelchair and pushchair users or the elderly and partially sighted, are forced onto the road and into danger.
Apart from that, this type of parking causes great inconvenience for the householders causing damage to the surface of the pavement. I was shocked that this practice had been going on for nearly two years up and down the High Street.
The constituents who came to see me recently did so as a last resort. Their attempts to reason with drivers have been met with threats of violence. Complaints to local Councillors and the Police have seen no change.
Both the Council and the Police have the power to stop this. My constituents have put up with it long enough. There is a car park lying empty just 30 yards away. Action must be taken now.”
