Bosnia and Northern Ireland commemorations announcedTuesday 15th January 2008Local MP and Secretary of State for Defence, Des Browne is giving early notice to veterans in Kilmarnock and Loudoun about 2 upcoming Commemoration services. The services will mark the contribution made by members of the British Armed Forces to operations in Bosnia-Herzegovina and Northern Ireland. Des Browne MP, Secretary of State for Defence, said: "I am delighted that these commemorations are to take place to pay tribute to the veterans and to those Service personnel who made the ultimate sacrifice in bringing stability, security and peace to these countries.” “Veterans from across the UK will be able to apply for tickets to attend the services. Details about the application process will be announced in the coming months but I am keen to raise awareness now amongst Kilmarnock and Loudoun veterans who may wish to attend.” On Thursday 22 May 2008 the commemorative service to honour the 55 personnel who lost their lives in Bosnia, those who were injured, and the many thousands who have served there throughout the 15 year deployment, will be held at the new Armed Forces Memorial, located in the National Memorial Arboretum in Staffordshire. On Wednesday 10 September 2008 a service to mark the end of operations in Northern Ireland will take place at St Paul's Cathedral. The service will pay tribute to the 763 personnel killed in Northern Ireland, and the 300,000 personnel who served in the province since 1969 who all contributed towards the peace that now exists. |
